HIGH ALTITUDE MEDICINE RESEARCH

The SPVU has had a long history in the investigation of High altitude problems and disease, with experience in the field as well as lab based investigations. Our unit utilising Doppler echocardiography already has experience of non-invasive assessments of pulmonary haemodynamics under hypoxic conditions and at altitude. Our current aim is the use of echocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and the analysis of genetic polymorphisms in order to elucidate those that will cope at altitude from those that will experience problems.
