At the clinic we would ask for your patience. You will require to allocate at least 2 hours to your clinic visit.
Before seeing the Doctor, the clinic staff will guide you through a series of tests which include:
- Chest x ray
- ECG
- Spirometry
- Height and weight measurement
Once these tests are complete, you will be seen by a Pulmonary Vascular doctor. You will be seen by either one of our 2 consultants, or by a Pulmonary Vascular Research Fellow (senior Dr.).
During the consultation, a full history and examination is performed.
A family member may be present if you wish.
What happens next?
Following the consultation, one of three things will happen:
- You will be informed that we do not believe that further investigations are appropriate for you and a full explanation given. A letter explaining this in detail will be sent back to your hospital consultant with our recommendations for future management.
OR
- You will be informed that although we believe you do not have PH at present, there is a possibility that you are at risk of developing it in the future. A follow up appointment may be given, further tests organised, or recommendations for monitoring your health will be sent to your consultant.
OR
- You will be informed that we believe you may have a condition called Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, and that further tests are required to confirm this diagnosis.
At this point you will be formally introduced to one of the Specialist Nurses within the unit. The nurse will talk to you about arranging a 5 day admission to the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, in Clydebank, in order that a complete assessment of you and your symptoms can be carried out. There will be an opportunity at this point for you and your family to ask questions. The nurse will supply you with his/her direct contact details which you may use if you have any questions or concerns before your admission.
The waiting list for admission is approximately 6-8 weeks although this can vary.
It is important to note that the diagnosis of PAH is made only at the end of the 5 day admission.
