NEW PATIENTS : HOW TO OBTAIN AN APPOINTMENT

HOW TO OBTAIN AN APPOINTMENT / THE FIRST CONSULTATION / DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS

Referrals to the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit are made by hospital consultants directly to the unit.

Your GP will initially refer you to your local hospital consultant, usually a consultant in Cardiology, Respiratory or Rheumatology. This is done so that tests can be carried out which can indicate whether or not you have pulmonary hypertension. If these single tests such as x ray, ECG and echocardiogram indicate the possibility of PH, your consultant will refer you to the unit.

The approximate waiting time between your referral letter being received by the unit and an appointment given is usually about 6 weeks. This can vary in exceptionally busy times.

Routine referrals are sent an appointment to come through to Glasgow to meet the team. The SPVU new referral clinic is held monthly, on the 1st Wednesday of the month, in the afternoon. If you require transport to the clinic, your GP will arrange this for you.
